The core  of stock items  management  is that: 

stock items are assigned  Unique Stock  Codes  or   Item  Numbers 

to monitor stock items          a vital aspect.

Codes or item numbers are not just  in serial order  

       Codes are  in alpha numeric order  increasing accuracy in monitoring  stock items.
